Nikkei: Japan New Nintendo DS Model Adds Camera, Music Playback

Reports out of Japanese newspapers Saturday indicate that Nintendo is preparing to announce a new version of the Nintendo DS hardware in the coming days, one that adds non-gaming functions to the popular portable machine.

Nikkei Net, the online arm of Japan's foremost economic newspaper, reports that the new model will launch this year in Japan and include a camera and music playback. Nikkei's take on the new machine is that Nintendo is moving outside the boundaries of the "game industry" and attempting to create a device that will compete with more general electronics like cell phones.

The machine's wireless communication functionality will also be strengthened by allowing it to connect to "information terminals," possibly allowing a user to find nearby train stations or restaurants using his DS.

MBI: The Newest Technology In Breast Cancer Diagnosis

The American Society of Clinical Oncology conference, meeting in Washington, DC this weekend, will be hearing about the results of experiments with a new technology for detecting breast cancers in women with dense breasts. It is called Molecular Breast Imaging, MBI, and it employs a radioactive tracer that is absorbed more by abnormal cells than healthy cells.

According to the Associated Press, the six-year study conducted at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, showed that cancerous tumors were three times more likely to be found using the MBI method versus mammogram imaging among women with dense (fibrocystic) breast tissue.

Radioactive tracing has been used in nuclear medicine for several years. A radioactive compound is generally injected into the body and picked up, for a brief period of time, by the area of the body that is to be studied. Once the compound is absorbed, it can be imaged by special "gamma" cameras. These images allow the radiologist to see the studied area more clearly than with X-ray alone.

The advantages of MBI, if it becomes a routine diagnostic imaging procedure, are that the technology is more accurate in detection of tumors in women with dense breasts, and it is also less expensive, costing about half as much to administer. MBI is expected also to save time and money on further diagnostic testing caused by the higher number of false positives found with mammogram imaging.

There is quite a disadvantage of MBI right now as well, as it emits 8 to 10 times more radiation than a mammogram. With newer technologies, however, that is likely to be improved.

This, of course, means plenty of room for the important things, like the full QWERTY keyboard.

RIM has definitely maintained the high level of expected quality with the BlackBerry Bold. The keyboard is the most notable example of this. We've tested most of the QWERTY keyboards on offer in 2008 and the Bold is still head and shoulders above them all. Each key is large (comparatively speaking) and features a tapered indentation which helps to define and separate these buttons. In the weeks we've had testing the Bold we've rarely found ourselves using the "backspace" key to correct typos from miss-striking the keyboard.

Similar to the BlackBerry Pearl series, the Bold makes use of a trackball for navigation. For the most part this style of menu navigation works well, although we did turn down the default sensitivity to help us move about the menus more accurately. When viewing Web pages, the trackball is excellent for scanning the page horizontally and vertically.

Surely the most outstanding physical feature of the Bold is its amazing display. This screen features an orthodox WQVGA resolution (480x320) positioned in landscape for widescreen media playback. At the launch of the Bold we watched several pre-installed video files, including the cinematic trailer for Speed Racer, and were astounded by the colour and clarity produced by this display.

It's been a long time coming, but we finally have a BlackBerry with HSDPA fast internet data transfers. In unison with inbuilt Wi-Fi, the data speeds make the Bold a strong competitor in the handheld internet stakes, indeed it would make it one of the best were it not for a cumbersome browser. The Bold also features an on-board GPS receiver but likewise suffers from terrible preloaded BlackBerry Maps.

Network Time Protocol (NTP) is one of the Internet’s oldest protocols still utilised. Invented by Dr David Mills from the University of Delaware it has been in use since 1985. NTP is a protocol designed to synchronize the clocks on computers and networks across the Internet or Local Area Networks (LANs).

NTP (version 4) can maintain time over the public Internet to within 10 milliseconds (1/100th of a second) and can perform even better over LANs with accuracies of 200 microseconds (1/5000th of a second) under ideal conditions.

NTP works within the TCP/IP suite and relies on UDP, a less complex form of NTP exists called Simple Network Time Protocol (SNTP) that does not require the storing of information about previous communications, needed by NTP. It is used in some devices and applications where high accuracy timing is not as important.

Time synchronisation with NTP is relatively simple, it synchronises time with reference to a reliable clock source. This source could be relative (a computer’s internal clock or the time on a wrist-watch) or absolute (A UTC - Universal Coordinated Time - clock source that is accurate as is humanely possible).

Atomic clocks are the most absolute time-keeping devices. They work on the principle that the atom, caesium-133, has an exact number of cycles of radiation every second (9,192,631,770). Stratum 1, are computers attached to stratum 0 devices, while Stratum 2 are computers that send NTP requests to Stratum 1 servers. NTP can support up to 256 strata.

All Microsoft Windows versions since 2000 include the Windows Time Service (w32time.exe) which has the ability to synchronise the computer clock to an NTP server (or an SNTP server – a simplified version of NTP) Many LINUX and UNIX based operating systems also have a version of NTP but the source code is free to download (current version 4.2.4) at the NTP website (ntp.org).

It is strongly recommended by Microsoft and others, that external based timing should be used rather than Internet based, as these can’t be authenticated. Specialist NTP time servers are available that can synchronise time on networks using either the MSF (or equivalent) or GPS signal.

NEW YORK--Nearly six months after its next generation of music phones hit the market in Europe, Nokia is finally bringing the latest XpressMusic phones to the U.S.

T-Mobile USA on Tuesday unveiled the Nokia 5310 XpressMusic phone, a slim, music-playing handset, at a party here that featured specialty cocktails with names like Disco Lemonade and Purple Rain and performances by up-and-coming artists, K.i.D Cudi, Chester French and the DJ, Kid Capri.

T-Mobile is the first and only wireless operator in the U.S. to sell the new 5310 Xpress Music phone and its big brother the 5610 Xpress Music phone. Both phones were annouced by Nokia last August, and they started shipping in Europe in the fourth quarter.

The Nokia 5310 MusicExpress handset hits T-Mobile stores on May 28. Unfortunately, the flashier Nokia 5610 won't be available until sometime this summer. Why the wait? The company is still adding and making special tweaks to the 5610 that are specially designed for the T-Mobile network, said Tom Harlin, product marketing manager at T-Mobile.

The Nokia 5310 XpressMusic is a very slim candy bar style phone at only 0.39 inches thick and weighing just 3 ounces. It features a 2 megapixel camera that takes still pictures and videos. And of course, it's got a music player with external controls and stereo Bluetooth connectivity along with T-Mobile's special myFaves support.

Also in the box is a wired stereo headset, a USB cable for side loading music, and a memory card. And to top it off, T-Mobile has preloaded the phone with two exclusive new songs from artists Panic At The Disco and Phantom Planet. As an added bonus, the Nokia 5310 is also loaded with Panic At The Disco's latest video, "That Green Gentleman." T-Mobile also included a special making-of the video with a greeting from the band.

"We wanted people to be able to use it and start listening to music right out of the box," Harlin said.

Getting cool new phones like the XpressMusic phones into the U.S. market is important for Nokia as it tries to bolster its market share here. The company, which is the worldwide leader in handset sales, is in fourth place in the U.S. market. The company has been working closely with operators to get more of its handsets into the market, but it's struggled to make significant headway. That said, the company's CFO told Reuters earlier this week that it expects to grow its market share in North America into the double digits by the end of the year.

The music phones could be a good start for the company. Music-enabled phones made up 60 percent of the phones sold in the U.S. during the first quarter of 2008, according to the NPD Group.

The only downside to the new Nokia XpressMusic phones is that neither phone supports 3G, which means they won't be able to take advantage of T-Mobile's newly upgraded network. AT&T announced the new perk Tuesday for Laptop Connect customers who pay $60 or more a month for the company's cellular data service that operates on its HSDPA and EDGE networks.

The wireless market is heating up as carriers try to out-do one another. Last week, an AT&T executive said at an investor conference that the company is upgrading its HSDPA network to provide even faster network speeds to its data users. Today users who connect to AT&T's 3G network can expect to get download speeds between 400Kbps to 700Kbps. And once the software upgrade is complete using a newer version of the technology, those speeds could eventually be boosted to between 4Mbps and 6.6Mbps.

AT&T's 3G network is already deployed in some 275 U.S. markets, and the company is expected to reach 350 markets by the end of the year. It's 2.5G EDGE service already serves roughly 13,000 cities, the company has said.

So why does AT&T need to offer free Wi-Fi if it's already boosting 3G signals? One reason is that cellular coverage isn't everywhere. In some rural areas it's tough to get a signal. Another reason is that cellular service can often be weak indoors. Wi-Fi hotspots set up indoors can solve this problem.

That's why AT&T has been beefing up its Wi-Fi business in public locations like Starbucks coffee shops, McDonald's restaurants, and Barnes & Noble bookstores. Some of AT&T's DSL customers can already get free Wi-Fi in these hotspots.

AT&T's expansion of its free Wi-Fi service is now available only for its laptop data card users. It isn't yet available for smartphones, such as the iPhone. But the company has said that it will be coming later in the year.

Earlier this month, there were reports from some iPhone users about free access to Wi-Fi in some AT&T hotspots. The company even posted something on its Web site saying that free Wi-Fi was coming for iPhone users, but it then took down the notice. A company spokesman told The New York Times, the language on the Web site was a mistake, but that free Wi-Fi for all Wi-Fi-enabled smartphone users is coming.

Anyway, it makes sense for AT&T and other phone companies to offer free Wi-Fi to all its subscribers. On the wireline side of the business, it's a great perk for broadband subscribers and might even help the company win some new customers. Cablevision, a cable provider in the Northeast, is expanding its Wi-Fi hotspots as an added bonus for its broadband customers.

On the wireless side of the business, Wi-Fi offers AT&T a great way to offload bandwidth-intensive traffic from its expensive cellular network. And it provides faster, indoor coverage for some customers.

To receive alerts, you must be a member of the Administrators group for your computer. When you are connected to the Internet, Windows finds and downloads updates in the background—you are not notified or interrupted during this process and the updates do not interfere with other downloads.

After downloading is complete, the Windows Update icon appears in the notification area (bottom right of screen) and an alert pops up, letting you know that the updates are ready to be installed. To review and install available updates, click the icon or the alert. You can install all or some of the available updates.

3) Notify me but don't automatically download or install updates

To manually download and install updates, you must be a member of the Administrators group for your computer. Windows checks for important updates and notifies you if any are available; updates are not delivered or installed on your computer until you choose to do so. When Windows finds updates for your computer, the Windows Update icon appears in the notification area and an alert pops up, letting you know that updates are ready to be downloaded. After you click the icon or the alert, you can select some or all of the updates to download.

Windows downloads the updates in the background—you are not notified or interrupted during this process and the updates do not interfere with other downloads. When downloading is complete, the Windows Update icon appears in the notification area again, this time to let you know that the updates are ready to be installed. You can choose to install all or some of the available updates.

4) Turn off Automatic Updates

You will never be notified when important updates are available for your computer, and you will never be asked to download or install them. This means that your computer can be vulnerable to security threats and harmful viruses that can damage your computer or your files. Basically, System Restore is like a little hound that runs behind the scenes taking "snapshots" of various parts of the Microsoft Windows XP operating system. So, if a part of Microsoft Windows XP stops working one day, the System Restore utility is able to reference one of the "snapshots" it took and restore your system from a previous day (a day when your computer worked). It's kind of like going back in time to a day when your computer worked. All your current data (Microsoft Word files, etc.) are still retained, so you don't have to worry about losing any present day files.

In order to restore your computer just follow these simple steps:

1. Close any open programs.
2. Click on the Windows "Start" button (normally located on the bottom of your computer desktop)
3. Click on "All Programs"
4. Click on "Accessories"
5. Click on "System Tools"
6. Then click on "System Restore"
7. At this point the System Restore wizard will launch. You will have two options:

a. "Restore my system from an earlier date"
b. "Create a system restore point"

If you just need to restore your system and get it working correctly again, just select option "a" and click "Next."

8. On this screen you can select a date from the calendar that you would like to try and restore from. So, if you knew that your computer worked fine two days ago, just pick that date on the calendar and click "Next."
9. The next screen is the confirmation window. Just verify the information on the screen and click "Next." Windows XP will then reboot and try to restore your system with the settings from the date you selected.

The System Restore process can take anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes depending on how much reconfiguration Windows XP needs to do and how fast of a PC you have. When System Restore is done, a screen wills popup with the results of the restore. If it was successful, you can then log into the system and start using the computer again. Any quirky issues that you were having are now hopefully gone.

Now, on step 7b above, I mentioned the "Create a system restore point" option. This option is for when you want to force Windows XP to take a snapshot of your system just before you install a program or alter any system settings that you are not sure of. It is like a safety net for when you install any internet programs (sometimes riddled with spy ware) or system drivers (video, audio, etc). If you want to revert back to a virgin state just create a restore point "before" installing any software. This way, if your machine starts acting weird, you can just restore your settings from the selected point.

If a node fails, the virtual IP is failed over to another node in the cluster to provide an immediate note down response to connection requests.

Scalability
Scalability is the ability to add additional nodes to Real Application Clusters and achieve markedly improved performance. Real Application Clusters can take advantage of additional equipment and harness the processing power of multiple systems.
All servers in the cluster must run the same operating system and same version of oracle but they do not have to be exactly the same capacity.
High Availability

Buffer Cache Management
Within a single instance, Oracle stores resources, such as data block information, in a buffer cache that resides in memory. Storing this information locally reduces the disk Input/Output (I/O) necessary for database operations. Since each node in Real Application Clusters has its own memory that is not shared with other nodes, Real Application Clusters must coordinate the buffer caches of different nodes while minimizing additional disk I/O that could reduce performance. The Oracle Global Cache Service technology maintains the high-performance features of Oracle while coordinating multiple buffer caches.
Fast Commits, Group Commits, and Deferred Writes
Fast commits, group commits, and deferred writes operate on each instance in Oracle and work the same whether in exclusive or shared mode. Oracle only reads data blocks from disk if they are not already in the buffer caches of one of the instances. Because data block writes are deferred, they often contain modifications from multiple transactions. Optimally, Oracle writes modified data blocks to disk only when necessary:

• When the blocks have not been used recently and new data requires buffer cache space (in shared or exclusive mode)

• During checkpoints (in shared or exclusive mount mode)

• When another instance needs the blocks (only in shared mode)
• Cache copies of dirty blocks (changed blocks) across the interconnect (write/write consistency).
Row Locking and Multi version Read Consistency

Every day every people in Berlin watch a 100-second television news broadcast on their cellphones. In Italy, a million people pay as much as 19 euros each ($29) a month to watch up to a dozen mobile TV channels. AT&T Wireless, with 71.4 million phone customers, started AT&T Mobile TV in the United States. The 10-channel service, costing $15 a month, includes Pix, a channel with movies from Sony Pictures. AT&T will sell cellphones made by LG Electronics and Samsung that can receive the TV broadcasts.Britain is auctioning wireless spectrum this month that could be used for mobile TV. France plans to award a license for a 13-channel mobile video service in June. In Germany, Mobile 3.0, an investor group led by a South African-based media company, Naspers, plans to start a video service this year.These services join a handful of other mobile TV offerings like those in Switzerland and Italy, all beamed from special transmission towers to tiny receivers in the mobile phones.

Until the mobile broadcasting technology appeared three years ago, cellphone operators had to send video as prepackaged clips to individual customers over high-speed, third-generation phone networks. That proved costly to both operators and viewers, and the large video packets slowed other voice and data traffic on those networks. Direct mobile broadcasting does not tax the so-called 3G networks.Japan is the leader in direct mobile television, with 20 million cellphones equipped with TV receivers, followed by South Korea with 8.2 million, according to In-Stat, a research and consulting firm in Scottsdale, Ariz. In-Stat estimated that there were 29.7 million mobile TV viewers worldwide at the end of 2007. That is expected to almost double, to 56.9 million, at the end of 2008, driven by growth in Japan.

Italy has been an early leader in Europe, with service beginning in 2006. The largest mobile TV broadcaster on the Continent is 3 Italia, a cellular operator owned by Hutchison Whampoa of Hong Kong, with 800,000 customers, about 10 percent of its total phone clients. The million Italian viewers watch up to a dozen channels.Swisscom offers a 20-channel viewing lineup, which costs 13 Swiss francs ($12.50) a month. For some operators, mobile TV remains a niche service. In the United States, Verizon Wireless has offered mobile TV since March 2007, but In-Stat estimated that it had fewer than 100,000 paying viewers.

The European video broadcasts use a standard called DVB-H, short for Digital Video Broadcasting for Hand-helds, which was developed by the DVB Project, a group of 275 media , entertainment and telecommunications companies based in Geneva. Last July, the European Commission recommended that nations in the European Union use the DVB-H standard for mobile video, but the recommendation was not binding. In the United States, Verizon Wireless and AT&T Wireless use a rival technology called MediaFlo, which was developed by Qualcomm. Japan, South Korea and China use other standards.

All of these technologies let mobile network operators control television broadcasts by selling receiver-equipped cellphones and programming packages.

“It is fair to say that no single global standard has emerged as dominant yet,” said Lars Felber, product marketing manager at Elgato, a company in Munich that makes U.S.B.-stick TV receivers for Apple computers. “What appears to be emerging is a collection of different, complementary technologies.” While it is unclear which standard will prevail, equipment makers like Telegent Systems, of Sunnyvale, Calif., produce chips for all the standards.
